Sedona, Arizona: March 5, 1999

Sedona is located approximately 80 miles North of Phoenix.

The mountain bike riding in this area is truly impressive! With miles of spectacular single track and beautiful scenery, one cannot go wrong when visiting the Sedona area.

The trails in this area offer all of the qualities that a good biking area can possess. This particular ride was completed on the Broken Arrow Trail which is located just 1.5 miles from downtown Sedona. The views from the trails in this area are fantastic. The scenic redrock basins in this area offer some of the most incredible scenery that anyone will ever experience while biking. This wonderful March afternoon was a great early season day to get out and test the legs. The trails in the area are open to mountain bikes and Sedona seems to be a great place for bikers to visit.
The Broken Arrow Trail is easy to find and it is marked very well (most of the trails in the area are marked with Cairns so be sure to keep your eye out for them). If you are traveling on Highway 89A near Sedona you will want to turn off at highway 179 which is only a few minutes from downtown. Travel South on 179 until you hit Morgan Road (see map). Take Morgan Road a half of a mile to the trailhead. The sign in this picture will let you know that you have made it to the right spot.
You can follow this trail around to the Twin Buttes and on to Chicken Point. At this point you can either turn around and go back the way you came or you can descend down the Little Horse Trail back to highway 179. As you are traveling around the Twin Buttes you can't help but stopping and taking a very unique picture like the one shown here. Taking the camera is a must and it allows you to remember how special this place really is.
It is hard to determine what is more exceptional, the scenery or the riding. I guess the combination of both is what makes this relatively untapped cycling area so special. The sandstone makes for some excellent traction while attempting some of the short and technical sections. Most of the trails are hard-packed and fast. There is not that much climbing but the short steep sections will keep you on your toes. This ride is Moderate-Difficult and will challenge the skills of any rider.
