Headset Adjustments

"Threadless headset" Adjustments

Loosen the bolts on the side of the stem first. Most of these take a 5mm allen wrench.
  • Tighten or loosen the top adjusting bolt. This is the bolt that "pulls everything together" and is only adjustable when the side bolts are loose.
  • You want the bearing adjustment to be tight enough so that when you apply the front brake and rock the bike forwards and backwards, there is no movement in the headset. You don't want it too tight to the point where the headset is sticky. If there is no fine line between these two adjustment guidelines, then the headset is probably worn and needs to be replaced.

  • The side bolts are what holds everything in place after you have adjusted the top bolt and bearing friction level.

  • Align stem and wheel by eyeballing it and tighten side bolts.

"Normal Headset" Adjustments

  • Take to a local shop and have a professional with the proper tool complete this more difficult adjustment.
